British Bank Holiday

It had to happen. It’s a Bank Holiday and of course it’s raining.
You’re stuck indoors and a bit bored.
Get out your carrom board and have a few games.
You may as well, and if you’ve got kids, get them to join in.
Who knows, you might talk to each other.
Switch off the telly and the computer.
Do your bit for global warming and save a little bit of money.

Carromclub in Scotland?

I’m assuming this video was taken in Scotland because of the accents.
If it is, that’s good news.
I wonder if they would like to start a Carromclub?
Anyway, they were given a carrom board as a wedding present.
What a nice gift, much better than china, cutlery, pots and pans.
And once the honeymoon is over I hope they enjoy many an evening, flicking around.

Roll on 27th June

I can’t wait for the 27th June.

Not because of the change in the British government, but because I am going to a carrom contest with some friends.

Depending on the weather it will either be played in the garden or my friend’s sittingroom.

There will be people of all ages. There will be good food and drink, excellent music and a chance to show off my carrom skills. I don’t have any, so that shouldn’t take too long.

There aren’t any prizes.

It won’t be that serious, but it will give everyone a chance to meet up and have a laugh and possibly a little bet on who’ll be next Prime Minister.

My money’s on Gorgeous Gordon Brown.

No, I’m not blind, I happen to think he is a very attractive man, the strong silent type.

Much more manly than any other contender.

I think he will be a great Prime Minister if given the chance.

Carrom board or a Wii Wand?

We dont stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing!

The above quotation struck a chord with me as only this week I had my first go of Nintendo Wii. and it was great.

I have never had much time for computer games, despite my kids trying to convince me they were fun.

I was brought up with board games like monopoly, snakes and ladders, draughts and other games like dominoes and of course my all-time favourite, carrom.

I no longer play Monopoly, snakes and ladders, draughts and dominoes.

However I do still play carom, maybe not as often as there is always something I have to do and it seems quite self-indulgent to get out the carrom board when there is washing or dusting to be done.

However people who have bought a Nintendo Wii are claiming all sorts of health benefits and I must admit I felt quite exhausted after a few rounds of virtual tennis and golf.

The boxing I was quite good at, but hopeless with baseball.

We used to call this game rounders.

Nintendo are adding more games to the next generation of Wii.

I do hope they add carrom.

Despite the fun I had with the Wii, carrom is still my favourite game.

The carrom board I have is over 14 years old.

I don’t know if the plastic Wii wands will last that long.

May Day Holiday

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and there is another due soon.
Great for spending quality time with the family.
The thing is, everything is so expensive, especially if you have kids, or even just one.
So buy a carrom game if you don’t already have one.
It’ll cost about £50 and give hours, months, even years of pleasure and enjoyment.
Invite a few friends over, eat in the garden, play a few games.
You’ll miss all the traffic jams, noise, queues and it won’t break the bank.
I hope the weather is better next bank holiday though.
Keep on flicking.

Today would be a good day to have an annual holiday, dancing around May poles, eating Maid of Honour Cakes watching the Morris dancing.
Morris dancing has a long history and different groups of dancers were different outfits.
Have a look at the group of Morris dancers from Manchester.

Or you could just stay at home, have lunch and a game of Carom in the garden.
Sounds good to me.

Spring clean

It’s that time of year again.
The windows are grimy and it really shows when the sun shines through.
Time for a Spring clean.
Just be careful when you find your Carrom board crammed under the bed, along with suitcases, boxes and all the other odds and ends that breed underneath.
Do not scratch the playing surface. If you do you may be able to repair it, or you just get used to the pieces veering off when that was a definite pot.
When you’ve found your Carrom board, just dust it off, gently.
And that’s it.
Ready for play.

The weather for the weekend in London is going to be hot and sunny.
Don’t go to B & Q or Ikea. Visit carromcafe on Sunday and enjoy a free game of Carrom.
It’s not often you get something for free in London. And the chance to sit down.
See you on Sunday.

St.George’s Day

St.George’s Day never used to be a big deal in the U.K.
However that is all changing. Any excuse for another holiday. He’s the patron saint of England.
St. Patrick’s Day on 17th March, is for the Irish and any one else who wants to join in.
St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland and there’s a town named after him, well known for it’s golf, university and Prince William, who attended the university until recently. His day is celebrated by Scots on 30th November.
St. David is the patron saint of Wales and his day is 1st March.
This has nothing to do with Carrom except if we did start to celebrate these days think how many more Carrom Competitions we could have.
We could have Carrom champions and teams from all four countries.
Just remember rugby wasn’t so popular a few years ago, now look at it.
Tennis is too expensive for a lot of people, as is golf.
Good thing about Carrom, it can be played by men, women and children of all ages, and abilities.
However it can also be highly competitive and the top players are very skilled and use all sorts of tactics.
Maybe British men think it’s not exciting enough. Darts, dominoes, golf, bowls, cricket! Need I say more?
So all you women out there, I think it’s time to give the bingo a miss and start organising a few Carrom clubs.

Ronnie O’Sullivan played Fastest Snooker Frame ever

As I’ve written before, some people claim Snooker originated from Carrom.
I don’t know if it is true. It could be.
So for all you snooker/carrom fans the following video is for you.
It’s 10 years since Ronnie O’Sullivan played the Fastest Frame ever. I don’t think the record has been beaten yet.
He makes it look so easy 5 minutes 20 seconds - Snooker - Greatest 147
It happened on 21st April 1997 at the Embassy world championships which were held at the Crucible.
Poor Mick Price.
