There are 137500 videos when you type in snooker to Google. Not bad for a game that started out from carrom, or so it is claimed.
There are 34 when you type carrom.
What we need is a showman like this guy. He is a very good snooker player too.
He’s known as the Japanese snookerhero.

I read recently that Britain came near the bottom of a survey carried out by by an international children’s organisation.
It shows how countries compare internationally,
They missed the more imprtant question. Why? In one of the richest countries in the world why do we have the highest rate of teenage mothers, excessive drinking, which leads to excessive violence, spiralling petty crime, most of which isn’t reported as it is such a palaver to do so.
Why are our children so unappy?
Who or what is to blame?
And more importantly what can we do to stop, nay, reverse this?
I suggest we approach our local council for grants to set up Carrom clubs.
Get the kids off the street, into a safe environment and let them let off steam and compete against each other to see who is the winner.
Most of this excessive drinking, posteuring and dumbing down is only to show off to their mates and the girls hanging around.
We’ve all done it in the past, haven’t we?
We all grew out of it. Well most of us.
I am always a bit sceptical of statistics, having once worked in the Civil Service as it was known then.
Also it depends how the survey was carried out.
Were the teenagers asked privately or in groups?
Was it wet, windy and cold that day?
Was the survey conducted on a Monday morning, Tuesday afternoon or Thursday evening?
All of these factors can make a difference to the answer given.
But never mind.
Let’s do something before all these disillusioned and unhappy young people grow up to be disillusioned and unhappy adults, who will breed and produce yet more disillusioned and unhappy kids.
Carrom as a cure all.

This is for those of you who can’t find the rule book or the original box the pieces came in.
Yes we all know they’re somewhere safe. If only you could remember where you put them.
I usually tape the rule book to the back of the board so it is in easy reach.

To meet the Official Standards adopted by the Carrom Association carrom boards should be square, flat and the play surface should be made from top quality plywood with a hardwood frame. The play area should be 73.5 cm in length and width. The pockets must be 4.5cm in diameter and the frame of the board a minimum 4cm in width.

However you can buy a carrom board with a light, medium or dark finished frame and there are different medallions to choose from.
The important thing is that it comforms to the correct size.

I empathise with this poor guy who is finding out it’s a cruel world out there.
People change, not always for the better, they move on, die off, or have no time.
Buildings are knocked down, new ones built and so it goes on.
At least he has some good memories of playing carrom in the canteen. When was this? Now, fortunately or otherwise, with mobile phone cameras he’d be able to record any games of carrom he had in his lunch hour.
If I find out where he is now I’ll give the poor soul details of any carrom clubs in his area.
I just hope he’s not in the UK because THERE ARE NONE.
No, cancel that. I hope he is in the UK. Maybe I could interest him in starting a club.

In order to keep your board in the best possible condition follow these simple instructions and in return you will have years of fun.

Keep your board dry.
Keep your board away from extreme temperatures.
Treat it as you would wood, these boards are hand made and the designs are hand painted.
To prevent losing parts, keep all carrom pieces boxed and together.
To prevent scratches or accidental damage, when you finish playing cover the board with a cloth.
When you have finished playing wipe the board with a dry cloth, removing any residue.
Nail varnish may stain the board if players use cheap nail varnish so be careful!!
Store it under or behind the sofa, under the bed or better still, hang it on the wall.
Make sure you use rawlplugs and a screw or a hook strong enough.
Then all you do is thread a piece of strong cord through one of the holes in the corner of the board and hang it up.
It will look good, maybe cover up a stain on the wall, and be easy to get down when you fancy a game.

What does CAROM stand for?
Believe it or not it actually stands for Content Addressable Read Only Memory.
It has something to do with computers. I’m not techy enough to understand.
CAROM
If you can make up an acronym for Carrom or Carom there is a prize of a champion striker for the best one.
E.G. Can Anyone Really Offer More?
I’m sure you can do better than this.
There were no acronym for Carrom.

Well I had a good weekend.
My new friends enjoyed a few carrom games on Friday evening.
Then on Saturday we watched the lunar eclipse from my balcony.
We had a carrom board out there, a few bottles of wine and lots of delicious nibbles.
We played late into the night, with the big red moon shining on us. It was magical.
I think they have been converted to carrom. They want to play next weekend.
One of them is a natural. She has really good hand-eye co-ordination and seems to know instinctively how much, or little force to use to pot the coins.
She put me to shame.
Most of my pots are down to flukes.

This is just a quick post as I am off to meet some people who want to have a game of carrom.
This is the second wekend running they’ve asked for a game.
Hope it’s not just a flash in the pan.
They’re bringing a friend I haven’t met yet, but he has played carrom in India.
Sounds promising.

No caroming at high speeds when you’re driving.
And watch out for the full moon tomorrow.
